Chokecherry, Canada Red

Prunus virginiana 'Canada Red'

Description

Prized for its green to reddish-purple foliage in the spring and turning orange to purple in the fall, this hardy tree is adaptable to many soils and conditions, including secondary water.

This is a tree that can thrive in hot valleys and withstand freezing canyons making it a great tree for Utah.

This cultivated variety of the native chokecherry is exceptionally hardy and tolerant of different soil conditions. What sets it apart is its beautiful deep burgundy red foliage, which develops after the green leaves appear.

In spring, the tree graces us with beautiful racemes of white flowers, followed by bluish-black fruits that are eagerly devoured by robins. Throughout the summer, you may notice a light dusting of green leaves, but as the heat intensifies, the Canada Red transforms into a striking deep burgundy, rivaling the beauty of flowering plums. And come fall, prepare to be dazzled by its bright orange fall color.

The fruit should not be eaten raw by humans, but can be used to make jams and jellies. Available in standard or Multi-stem form.
