Ornamental Cabbage
Brassica oleracea
Description
The main purpose of the ornamental cabbage is to serve as decoration in the cooler months of fall, winter, and spring. Though they are biennials, it's best to treat them as an annual. Once hard frosts begin, the plant will wilt and lose most of their appeal. They are grown for their large rosettes of colorful leaves. They get great, vivid colors when temperatures fall below 50 degrees. Commonly used as cool season annuals for beds, borders, and containers. They are the same species as edible cabbages, but have much fancier and colorful foliage their cousins from the vegetable garden. Not palatable to eat. Zones 4-9
