Ornamental Kale

Bassica oleracea

Description

Ornamental kale are usually grown with ornamental cabbage and other cool weather plants. They are cool season biennials, but it's best to treat them as annuals. Once hard frosts begin, the plant will wilt and lose most of their appeal. They are the same species as their edible cousins from the vegetable garden, but much fancier and more colorful. Not palatable to eat. Loved for their deeply-cut, curly, frilly or ruffled leaves. Commonly used in beds and borders, and container plantings. Zones 4-9
