Pine, Bristlecone

Pinus aristata

Description

Bristlecone pines, also known as foxtail pines, naturally grow in the Rocky Mountains, particularly in Colorado, where you can find clusters of incredibly old trees. They are truly special and stand out with their deep green needles that have unique white flecks in each whorl.

While bristlecones are highly resistant to drought and thrive in arid conditions, they can also be planted in most yards as long as there is proper drainage. In a backyard setting, they tend to grow denser and bushier compared to their natural habitat, eventually reaching a height and width of about 10 feet.

Choosing a Bristlecone pine is a distinctive choice that comes with a rich local history. Having the opportunity to plant one is quite rare, so don't miss out!
