Redbud, Eastern

Cercis canadensis

Description

Eastern Redbud is a springtime favorite because of its cheerful show of bright rosy-pink blooms. Reddish purple buds form before the heart-shaped leaves emerge in early spring, giving the bare branches a cheerful showing.

Branches ascend in first years of growth, then shift to horizontal spread, giving mature trees a somewhat flat-topped look. Medium growing speed. Likes sun. Small, pinky-purple flowers in spring before heart-shaped leaves appear. Foliage is dark green through the summer, then turns into a bright yellow in autumn.

Plant in afternoon shade to avoid leaf scorch.
