Tomato
Solanum lycopersicum
Description
Tomato is a flowering plant of a nightshade family. Though they are labelled as vegetables for nutritional purposes, they are actually a fruit. Tomatoes are utilized in so many ways, eaten raw or cooked, they are a staple ingredient in hundreds of dishes. They offer a good source of Vitamin C as well as lycopene.
There are hundreds of varieties of tomatoes, our inventory changes quickly through the planting season. Some, but not all, of the varieties we carry include:
Amish Paste, Brandywine, Campbell, Celebrity, Cherokee Purple, DX 52-12, Early Girl, Goliath, Glacier, German Johnson, Green Zebra, Hawaiian Pineapple, Health Kick, Jet Star, Juliet, La Roma, Lemon Boy, Moscow, Red Grape, Red Pear, Rio Grande, Roma, Rutgers, Sunsugar, Super Sweet 100, Tomatillo, Viva Italia....and more!
Tomatoes require relatively warm weather (utilize a Wall O Water for an earlier growing season) along with significant sunlight. It is a good idea to stake, tie, or cage your plants to keep the stems and fruits off the ground. Consistent watering is necessary to prevent blossom-end rot as well as cracking of the fruits.
